Strength Training in Youth: Does It Stunt Growth, or Protect It?

The claim that weight training stunts growth in teenagers is a myth that's been debunked in the sports science literature for a long time.
One of the most common worries heard from young athletes' families is the claim that strength training stunts height growth. Current evidence doesn't support that view.
The concern is linked to the risk of growth plate (epiphyseal) injury; but with correct technique and appropriate load, that risk is extremely low — lower, in fact, than uncontrolled activities like jumping on an unstable surface.
Regular strength training increases bone density, reduces injury risk and improves sport-specific movement control — all three of which are among the easiest traits to build during youth.
Technique is taught first, load is increased gradually; training under experienced supervision is safer than any unsupervised sporting activity.
What should worry you isn't strength training — it's uncontrolled, unsupervised practice.
