Scoliosis and Postural Assessment

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine seen when looking from the front. In most cases the cause is unknown and it is noticed between the ages of 10 and 15, during rapid growth. Fzt. Bilal Kara carries out postural and spinal assessment and runs the process alongside your orthopaedic doctor.

A physiotherapist assessing spinal alignment and posture

When is it needed?

  • Noticeably more fatigue on one side after training
  • A noticeable strength asymmetry between the two sides
  • A performance plateau in a one-sided discipline
  • Asymmetry at shoulder or hip level
  • Increasing back tightness after long training sessions

What we do

  • Determining which side takes over the work through movement analysis
  • Measuring the strength difference between the two sides
  • Graded, balancing strengthening in the gym
  • Training-specific trunk stabilisation work
  • Regular re-measurement of strength and posture

Scoliosis in Bursa Nilüfer

Fzt. Bilal Kara provides one-to-one care for scoliosis at the clinic in Bursa Nilüfer — in Fethiye Mahallesi, on Kelebek Sokak, at a central point of Nilüfer, opposite the Fethiye covered market.

It is a short trip by car or public transport from İhsaniye, Odunluk, Balat, Özlüce, Ataevler, 23 Nisan and the surrounding areas. Every session is one-to-one, assessment-based and tailored to you.

Sport is possible with scoliosis — if planned right

Scoliosis isn't a reason to give up sport. The problem is usually that the programme is built symmetrically: a standard training routine that loads both sides equally further strengthens the side that's already dominant and grows the complaint.

Fzt. Bilal Kara uses movement analysis to determine which side is taking over the work and balances loading accordingly. Trunk strength sits at the centre of the programme; weight is increased as long as technique holds up. The goal isn't correcting the curve — it's keeping the sport going without injury.

Do you need to give up your sport?

Usually not. The problem usually isn't the discipline itself, but the programme being built symmetrically: a standard training routine that loads both sides equally further strengthens the side that's already dominant. Continuing the discipline with a strength programme that balances the loading is usually possible.

How is the strength difference measured and closed?

The two sides are tested separately in the gym; if the difference is above a certain threshold, a programme prioritising the weaker side is built. Progress is tracked through regular re-measurement.

When is a physician referral needed?

Suspicion of the angle progressing rapidly, a newly appearing neurological finding, or a curve noticed during growth years call for physician assessment; Fzt. Bilal Kara refers these cases without waiting.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone with scoliosis do weight training?

Usually yes; the programme is built accounting for the strength difference between the two sides and avoiding growing the asymmetry.

Do one-sided disciplines make scoliosis worse?

There's no firm evidence they directly increase the curve, but they can make muscle imbalance more pronounced; balancing strength work is recommended for that reason.

Is return to the field decided by the strength difference?

Yes, once the measured strength difference between the two sides drops below a certain threshold, training load is increased gradually.

Other treatments

  • Posture

For a rounded back and forward head posture: a programme built on measured mobility and strength.

  • Back Pain

For pain settling between the shoulder blades that builds through the day: a programme aimed at the source.

  • Ankylosing Spondylitis

For morning stiffness and spinal rigidity: a consistency-based exercise programme that protects mobility.
