Pushing through the pain and continuing to train can turn a minor herniation into a bigger one in athletes. Knowing where to draw the line matters.

Back pain is common in athletes and is usually muscular — a picture that training can often continue through with a short adjustment. But certain symptoms signal that continuing is risky.

What can be trained through

A mild tension felt with a specific movement, pain that eases with warming up and doesn't spread into the leg, can usually be managed by temporarily adjusting training load.

Symptoms that mean stop

Pain that spreads into the leg, worsens with sitting, or starts noticeably stiff in the morning points toward a herniation. Continuing to load through this picture delays recovery.

The risk of "playing through pain" culture

The habit of continuing to train despite pain can turn an acute problem into a chronic one. Early assessment prevents a much longer injury layoff than a short pause would.

What assessment establishes

It identifies which movements are safe and which are risky; rather than a full break, a modified programme is usually recommended.
